Prior to 1868, Tokyo was known as Edo. A small castle town in the 16th century, Edo became Japan's political center in 1603 when Tokugawa Ieyasu established his feudal government there. A few decades later, Edo had grown into one of the world's most populous cities.

Finding food in Tokyo is absolutely no problem. The city is teeming with restaurants catering to just about every mood and craving. Many Japanese restaurants cater to a particular taste like udon, sushi, yakitori, or whatever the house specialty might be, however, it's not difficult to find establishments that serve enough of a variety to please the choosiest eater.

In addition to hotels for all pockets Tokyo also has a cheap accommodation system in hostels. The hostels and bed and breakfasts in the area can be a lot less than the hotel prices for rooms. They offer clean and hospitable stays in the area, but some have dormitory style arrangements where you may be expected to share facilities.
