Cairo- the Triumphant City - the Orient Jewel- the Land of the Thousand Minarets is the glorious capital of Egypt the cradle of civilization and the beacon of religion. It is the largest city in the Middle East and Africa and lies at the centre of all routes leading to, and from the three continents: Asia, Africa and Europe. Greater Cairo extends on the banks of the River Nile to the south of its delta. Here the Nile divides into its two distributaries: Rosetta and Damietta. It is the city where past and present meets. On its east side stands the evidence of 2000 years of Islamic, Christian and Jewish culture still flourishing to this day. On its west side lays the ancient Egyptian city of Memphis (Giza), the renowned capital of the Old Kingdom and the site of the Pyramids, the only wonder surviving of the Seven Wonders of the World. Indeed, a journey through Cairo is a journey through time. It is a journey through the history of an immortal civilization. Many airlines operate daily flights from and to the Cairo International Airport. Egypt Air operates internal flights to all parts of Egypt including Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan, Abu Simbel, AI-Wadi al-Gadded (New Valley) and Hurghada. Sinai Air also to north and south Sinai. The Egyptian Railway Authority operates several air-conditioned and ordinary trains. Several Bus Companies also have a firm chain of network inter-connecting Cairo. Although a network of tramways and buses serves most areas in Cairo public transportation, it is usually crowded and unreliable. Taxis are recommended as the most reliable transportation means for visitors. Taxis in Cairo are white and black in color and can be stopped anywhere by waving to the driver. Driving in Cairo is not easy. Unless you are used to driving there, it is recommended you use a taxi. |
